Blog: New Ways to Dream

‘Sunset Boulevard is a musical with book and lyrics by Don Black and Christopher Hampton and music by Andrew Lloyd Webber. Based on Billy Wilder’s Academy Award-winning 1950 film of the same title, the plot revolves around Norma Desmond, a faded star of the silent screen era, living in the past in her decaying mansion on the fabled Los Angeles street’.

One of the songs in the film starts:

This was dawn, there were no rules, we were so young,

Movies were born; so many songs yet to be sung.

So many roads still unexplored;

We gave the world new ways to dream.

Somehow we found new ways to dream.

… We’ll give the world new ways to dream

Everyone needs new ways to dream

A project business case is prepared. The financial element is defined with possible revenue improvements modelled and cost savings listed. Business analytics will enable for better decision making. Data warehouse gives us metrics about the organisation that were not known before. Real-time collation of information provides bell weather indicators that the Directors and Senior Managers will react to.  Organisation risks will be reduced and governance improved through functionality such as workflow with automated delegation of authority based on a rule set. Time will be saved with the reduction in non-conformance and less wastage through the removal of rework. Web enablement will mean IT savings in rolling out thick client software or not having to buy Citrix.

These are all important goals from the corporate perspective. They tick the right boxes and are as expected.

Now let us consider those individuals whose day to day lives will be changed by the project. Do they think in the same way or is it something much more closer to home? Consider the above with a focus on the user:

  • Revenue improvements and cost savings : increases in profit related pay (motivational benefit)
  • Business Analytics : less stress when taking decisions as more options can have been modelled (motivational benefit)
  • Improved governance : less time spent firefighting so one can focus on more interesting work (motivational benefit)
  • Reduction in rework: less frustration with having to redo things (motivational benefit)
  • Web enabled software: enables working from home and not having to travel to work (motivational benefit)

At TouchstoneEnergy we want more than to dream of a better life; we want to turn that dream into reality. As the song goes:

… We’ll give the world new ways to dream

Everyone needs new ways to dream

So when writing out a business case, let us consider two messages. The first is the corporate message meeting the governance requirements of the organisation. The second is the message to those users of the system and what it means to them; to give them a better life.
